The picture above shows an obese American at the doctor's office.  The doctor is telling him to put a lock on his fridge, probably hinting that he should not consume any more food.  The expression on the patient's face is not one of happiness, but one of negativity and maybe even fear.  The caption at the top of the photo suggests that obesity is jacking up the price of health care costs.  This is because more and more Americans are becoming obese every year - it is often said as common knowledge that our generation may be the first to not outlive our parents.  The rise of readily available fast food and the decline of healthy habits contributes to a gain in obesity throughout the population.  The picture portrays that something must be done to stop the contributing factors to obesity or the epidemic will only worsen.

  1. To start off I think the first thing I noticed about the patient was how he was supporting the red, white, and blue. I think that it puts an emphasis on the fact that America is the fattest nation in the world. By showing the patient with his shirt off we truly see how obese he is and that he can't control he eating habits and that is why he has found himself in the doctors office. I don't think by putting a lock or constraint on someones fridge or anything of that sort will help our nation and the rising health care cost. People will find a way to get food and will do anything to get what is tasty and not always healthy. This observation could definitely lead to a good common place article.

  2. I think that this cartoon is pointed more at the health care problem and the choices Americans make regarding their eating habits. The doctor is commenting on the the fact that health care cost may be rising because of the lack of control Americans have for eating. A way to control your own health care cost would be through taking care of yourself. I like how you tied in the fast food to the reason for obesity. I agree that this is becoming an issue for Americans. Many low income families resort to fast food because its quick and cheap. As a result they have poor health conditions. Some people just don't have any control and eat fast food multiple times a day. Learning control and how to live a healthy life style is a way to help make our health care system less costly and over our communities healthier.

  3. When looking at this cartoon, I agree that it is more about health care costs and the relationship between that and obestiy. I think the cartoon is trying the say that we can reduce health care costs if we are skinnier people who would then be healthier people. Yes Americans are becoming more obese every year but does obesity automatically mean unhealthy? In some cases the answer is yes but not always. Also, just because you are skinny, you are not automatically considered healthy and out of the way for health problems. Anyone can have health problems that have nothing to do with their weight or level of obesity. Yes, decreasing the amount of obese people will decrease the amount of health issues related to obesity and some health care costs but it isn't the solution to decrease all health care costs.
