Video Games and Violence in Children

In this picture, this child was threatening to stab his knee after playing a violent video game.

I found this a very interesting topic to talk about because many people mention that in the Columbine High School Massacre, the two boys played a lot of violent video games which may have contributed to the shootings. I personally think that the incident was not due to video games, but it does raise a good question; Should it be legal to allow children play rated M games as long as their parents buy the games for them? I think that children aren't responsible enough to understand and parents don't understand enough about video games to be able to choose whether the child plays the game or not. What do you guys think that they should do about the video games and the relationship with the violence in children that play them?

  1. Sammy, Alex Coakley, and Weiming think that...

Alex: I would agree with Jeffrey here that this does raise a very valid point. Whether or not video games should be legalized for kids if their parents buy them or not I feel is not the question. The question, to me, in that instance becomes why are the parents not being strict enough with their children? This could also be a connection to the fact that maybe the video games don't automatically force the children to act that way, the parents lack of structure does. This is a coincidence for me because my ARP is on structure of younger children and effects it has on them as they grow up. I never took into consideration that a careless act of buying a "seemingly harmless" video game for their under-aged child could have such an extreme impact on a child. There are a lot of things to take into consideration, however, based on the picture it just implies that this video game impacted the kid to act the way he did, but when you really analyze it, there is so much more to the situation than that. Nonetheless, this is a very intriguing photo, and also funny from my standpoint of watching my friends get outrageously mad while playing video games(not me of course).

Sammy: Think this photograph is very interesting because it shows how the obsession of video games can consume children at such young ages such as this young boy in the photo. Many video games are violent and contain weapons like the ones the boy is holding and he is using them in an aggressive way like the video game would. I feel like this shows that many young kids get consumed into this culture of anger and violence at such a young age because of video games and the culture they are surrounded by. Even the facial expression he has on his face demonstrates his huge anger that he learned somewhere from something which was the video game. I know it was the video game because of the shirt he is wearing which I found interesting because he was representing something that makes him so angry.

Weiming: Video games are always big problems for parents and for teachers. And it is the fact that children today are becoming more and more addicted to the video games. Most of the video games are about some violent theme. Children and youth kill people in the game and they like this kind of games very much. I think that is one of the reasons that parents and teachers are worried about it. They are afraid that their children would get used to the violence and killing stuff and in that case, they would do something dangerous in the real life. The children in the picture acts like he is a soldier and he hold a knife and a gun in his hands. I think it is kind of tendency that the author wanna show. He is worried about the thing as well.
